What is Occupational Therapy?

Skills for the job of living

Occupational Therapy (OT) emphasizes activities to promote independence, successful play, self-help, and school skills.

Areas of focus for the occupational therapist include:

bulletFine motor skills - small, finely coordinated hand movements
bulletVisual, perceptual and motor skills - the ability to understand and interpret what is seen
bulletSelf care skills - for independent feeding, dressing, and hygiene
bulletOral motor and feeding issues
bulletBody awareness
bulletPositioning and adaptive equipment
bulletSensory motor skills
bulletCognitive function
bulletOrthotics training and fitting for upper extremities
bulletModalities such as electronic stimulation, heat, and ultrasound

There can be overlap between the different therapies because they are related and complementary services. The differences are in the techniques and activities used and the areas with which they are concerned.

Epicenter Therapy Services emphasizes the team approach to avoid duplication of therapies.
